It is possible to talk about a 100-year history of efforts and works aimed at preserving Turkey's natural and cultural values in terms of the state and society. The archives of the Ministry, which carry the institutional memory of the city and nature at the state level, have been destroyed for various reasons over the years and could not be transferred between generations with the necessary care.
Conservation efforts in the social field, on the other hand, were able to progress with the astute efforts of some professional chambers and protectionist associations. Institutionally, we are on the brink of an education, skill and social accumulation related to archiving, processing and reproducing our cultural memory of the city and nature. However, especially in recent years, we have been witnessing an increase in personal efforts to preserve and document narratives, oral history, intangible culture parallel to the disappearance of rural life, along with technological opportunities. It should also be noted that these efforts are not collected within a certain system or directed towards a certain purpose.
It is another fact that the efforts of urban professional groups and connoisseurs have come to the fore in the last 40 years in the field of urban and nature protection. However, the work on the protection activities of both these institutions and the members of this institution is not protected in a systematic way.
Protection and Law
In Turkey, the legal efforts of the İzmir Environmental Movement Lawyers Group in the field of urban and environmental protection have an indisputable place and importance. The lawyers that make up this group have made significant contributions to the preservation of cultural and natural values throughout Turkey, especially in Izmir. The documents, which are the product of a team effort, shed light on the state-society-capital relations of the 1980s and 90s; It also reflects the social and cultural relations of the period. In terms of shaping urban life, the collection documents of each lawyer who make up the group are full of “stories that make us who we are”. Carrying this memory to future generations as a collection is primarily the responsibility of those operating in this field.
Acting with this awareness and carrying out conservation activities in the legal field, the Ecology Collective Association has started a study that will bring together the collections representing this unique memory of culture and nature conservation with the society in accordance with "digital archive" standards.
The aim of this study is to bring together the personal collections for the protection of the city and nature, and to ensure the survival of the urban memory. It is this memory of knowledge that keeps cities alive and reproduces them. This memory, which keeps the concepts such as solidarity, co-creation and social justice that constitute urban values alive, are also vital steps that will make spaces livable.
First Step: Noyan Özkan Archive and Library
The documents, archives, files, produced by the lawyer Noyan Özkan, who has produced important values in the field of city and nature protection since the 1980s, were donated to the Ecology Collective by Noyan Özkan's family in order to be shared with the public in accordance with international librarianship standards. This archive, which is protected with the intense contributions and efforts of its colleagues, will take its place in the digital library world at the end of March 2018. We are starting to process the Noyan Özkan archive, in the hope that it will lead to the emergence of many precious collections that are waiting to be shared and to be a part of public life like this archive. At the same time, this will be the first building block of the city and environment library that we have built digitally and will be developed on the basis of collections. The infrastructure we have built for a long time will be the first example of a digital library in the field of civil society. Digital culture and nature conservation data will play an important role not only in the reproduction of social memory, but also in the creation of our common wealth that will shed light on our future. Any contribution to this library, which will also be a reading of the history of Turkey on the basis of personal collections, on the basis of ideas, awareness and volunteerism will also be a sign of the construction of our common values.
We are on the Road for Social Memory, Conservation and City-Nature
We set out by realizing the importance of preserving and developing social memory in order to become a society that learns how to access information and documents and institutionalizes the culture of learning. For this reason, we move towards the future by collecting, blending and documenting everything about the past, without reducing the space to individual objects, without dedicating experiences to a human life.
In a geography where civilizations sprout and take root as well as being a haunt, it is customary to be rootless and take root. In the lands of the Pergamon civilization, those who carried the mortar to the first library were perhaps the first firemen of the digital age today. Hence their roots and rootlessness. The whole world has now understood what documents and information mean in terms of being a carrier between these generations, civilizations and values. In the popular age when memory was invented, we are on the way for legal grounds that will be the carrier of cultural nature and urban memory.
Principles
Our age is an age in which information is rapidly commodified, individual, society and cultural elements are re-arranged through commodity culture, and it is stuck in the moment. This is an era in which societies that grasp the institutionalization, production and reproduction of knowledge redefine the world over and over again. In this sense, the socialization of knowledge does not occur only through commodification. Many forms of public knowledge production are also possible. We can use knowledge for a better life for those who strive for a society where knowledge is shared as a social value and produces solidarity and wisdom, as opposed to the dominant commodity culture. In this sense, it is possible to look at documents that are the product of personal practices from this perspective. We also believe that this solidaristic collective spirit has the potential to create a morality in the formation of cultural urban identity. An article, a photo, a video are never numbers and numbers. For this reason, we hope that this digital library, which is thought to be created for public purposes, will also be instrumental in producing quality public information for public purposes.
Stakeholders
This event is carried out in cooperation with the Ecology Collective Association, the Union of Turkish Bar Associations, the Environment and Urban Law Commission and the Konak Municipality.
Program
We are waiting for you all to the event that we will hold on the occasion of the beginning of bringing the Noyan Özkan archive to the public in accordance with the standards of digital librarianship.
The panel part of the event, which consists of 2 parts, will focus on the legal efforts and values of the actors who play an important role in shaping the urban culture of İzmir, and the meaning of conservation awareness in the shaping of today's urban identity; In the formation of this identity, the social and individual formation stages of space, time and documentation will be emphasized.
In the workshop, conservation culture in Turkey and the developments in the world will be discussed together, and the ways and methods of how the increasing interest in museums, archiving and documentation can be found in practical social life will be discussed. In this context, it is aimed that the ideas and discussion topics presented in the workshop will contribute to the continuity of the social urban memory, while on the other hand, it will be instrumental in making the collections of social groups and people working in the field of ecology and the city visible.
Hoping to be together
