Niger Stops Donkey Export

Niger has banned donkey exports from the country, warning that it threatens the donkey population in the country. Officials said that donkey exports, especially to Asian countries, have increased threefold in the last period.

"If exports continue, most of the donkeys will disappear," a government official told the BBC. China, in particular, imports a lot of donkey skins to use its gelatin in medicinal concoctions, potency-enhancing drugs and anti-aging creams.

Last month, neighboring Burkina Faso banned the export of donkeys for the same reason.
Atte Issa from the Ministry of Livestock of Niger “This year, 80 thousand donkeys were exported. Last year, this figure was 27 thousand,” he said.

The ministry also banned the slaughter of donkeys in the country. BBC Correspondent Baro Arzika in Niger's capital, Niamey, says that because the donkey trade has become too profitable, breeders have stopped feeding other animals and have started the donkey trade. It is stated that the price of donkeys has increased from 100 to 145 dollars in the last period. The price of donkey skin in Burkina Faso has increased from $ 4 a few years ago to $ 50. In both countries, donkeys are used to transport goods, but some communities also eat the meat of donkeys.
